A big league win Cinco de Mayo style

On Cinco de Mayo, of all days, the Mariners gave their fans something to celebrate. Seattle has broken their five-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over Texas and they no longer have to share the title of “Worst in the West.”

I know from personal experience that the Rangers are the perfect team to cure your playing woes (and the Pirates). I live in Detroit and I attended the game where an anemic Tigers squad dropped 19 runs on Texas.

So now was the best possible time for Seattle to wake up those bats.

Jose Lopez (2-for-4, RBI), Raul Ibanez (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Wladimir Balentien (2-for-3, HR, 3 RBI) drove in all but one of the Mariners’ runs. Ritchie Sexson was the other player to drive in a run with his solo home run in the third. All seven runs came in the game’s first three innings.

Tthe offense was most appreciated by Jarrod Washburn who had the league’s worst run support coming into the game. He went six plus innings, giving up three earned runs off four hits. He left early because of a strained calf muscle but the team believes he should make his next start.

Being the Debbie Downers that they are, the Seattle Times pointed out that the Mariners notched just one hit after the first three innings and Texas retired the last 14 batters. So, in some ways, Seattle still has an anemic offense.

But let’s not pay attention to that. Seattle won a game! Let’s extend the Cinco de Mayo celebration. Who wants another Corona?!
