The streak is over! OK, so it’s not the losing streak, which everyone wants to end, but the Mariners’ scoreless innings streak ended at 24 during their 4-2 loss to the White Sox.
It’s the equivilent of someone telling the captian of the Titanic that the ship will sink in two hours rather than one. Sure, it’s an improvement, but the end result is still the same.
Seattle wasted another decent outing, this time from Carlos Silva (7 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, K). It wasn’t a quality start, but Silva went seven innings and considering must normal Major League teams average about four runs per game, he gave the Mariners a chance to win.
Despite having three less hits than the White Sox, Seattle managed to leave five more men on base (15 left on base total). Rookie Wladimir Balentein left a total of four runners on base. That’s not as pathetic as Adrian Beltre and Jose Vidro, two veteran players hitting clean up and No. 5, respectively, leaving three runners on base, each.
Some believed that Thursday night’s bench-clearing brawl would provide some kind of spark but, instead, it became a laughingstock, criticized by various media outlets as a pathetic reason to charge the mound. Which is fitting since the Mariners are, right now, a pathetic excuse for a Major League Baseball team.
