Wow. The only thing more depressing than this season is … no, no, there is nothing more depressing than the Mariners’ season right now. I think even O.J. Simpson is looking at this team and thinking, “Damn, at least I’m not them.”
Seattle lost, yet again, 5-2 to the Rangers, and this game featured everything that has plauged the team.
No hitting.
Poor fielding.
Spiritless pitching.
This team doesn’t even suffer from going one step forward and two steps back. It’s just leaping backwards with each passing day.
On Tuesday night the Mariners committed four errors that cost them three of the five runs scored by the Rangers. Raul Ibanez committed two errors on his own. He and Jose Lopez were the only ones who showed up at the plate, going 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively. No one else showed up and three different players left three men on base. I could keep going, but I’ll let David Andriesen from the Post-Inteligencer throw out some more numbers:
Twelve losses in 14 games, including a spiritless 5-2 defeat at Rangers Ballpark on Tuesday.
Eight consecutive series lost.
Two or fewer runs scored in nine of the past 13 games.
Nineteen walks and five errors in the first two games of this series.
A nine-game deficit in the American League West.
A 15-26 record at the season’s quarter pole, putting Seattle on pace for one of the more unexpected 100-loss seasons in recent baseball history.
Someone on the team killing a man would probably be better news than what the Mariners are doing right now. Then again, in essence, the team is killing all of us inside little by little.
