No one can wipe away his stunning smile

Carlos Silva won’t hide his pearly whites, even in the face of an awful pithcing performance. No, that’s not him after yesterday’s 8-2 loss, but Silva did have an answer for the Mariner’s current woes.

Following Seattle’s fifth straight loss Silva believes his team should change … nothing! Courtesy of this morning’s Seattle Post-Intelligencer:

“To be honest, one thing that I see here is too (many) changes,” Silva said after suffering his first loss of the season. “Sometimes we do something wrong and we want to change the whole thing. We have to stay right there, because when we start changing a lot of things, we’re going to go down.”

What? This is the same guy who didn’t think he was that bad against the Yankees. I’ll let the Seattle Times explain:

Silva insisted he didn’t pitch as poorly as his final line, even though left-handed hitters went 7 for 12 off him with the two homers, a double and a sacrifice fly. He had worked hard to contain lefties — previously his Achilles’ heel — this season, keeping them off-balance with a sinker inside and a changeup that floats away.

“I pitched the same way I’ve been pitching,” he said. “I left some pitches up. But I’m telling you, there are some very good hitters there, very smart hitters. You make a mistake, they make you pay.”

I enjoyed manager John Mclaren’s assement much better:

“Silva didn’t have his good sinker today and he centered some balls up, and they took advantage of it,” manager John McLaren said. “They hit the ball pretty hard off him.”

I can’t make fun of Carlos Silva too much. Coming into the game he was one of a few Mariners who was playing well and this was his first implosion of the season. But come on Carlos, you gave up eight runs off eleven hits in three innings! You don’t think there was something you were doing wrong compared to your other outings?

Well, at least he’s not this guy. And considering how rough this season has been for Seattle, maybe they need someone with a pair of rose colored glasses.

Or the Texas Rangers to beat up on. Oh, what do you know, a four game series against the Rangers beginning Monday night. I smell a resurgence.
